How to Shrink a Hoodie (Without Destroying It)
Posted by LUCA BRICKENKAMP
So, your hoodie is too big. Maybe you bought it oversized, maybe it stretched over time, or maybe you got lost in it and barely made it out alive. Whatever the reason, you’re now on a mission to shrink it. Fear not! This guide will help you transform your hoodie from "tent-sized" to "just right"—without accidentally turning it into a crop top.
Step 1: Check the Fabric (Science Time!)
Before you start, check the hoodie’s tag. If it’s mostly cotton, congrats! You’ve got a good chance of shrinking it. If it’s mostly polyester, well… you might be better off just eating more snacks and growing into it.
Step 2: The Boiling Cauldron (a.k.a. Your Washing Machine)
Wash your hoodie in the hottest water setting possible. This makes the fabric contract, just like how you shrink in fear when your phone falls face-down on concrete. Use a normal amount of detergent and let it wash completely.
Step 3: The Sweatshirt Sauna (a.k.a. The Dryer)
Once washed, toss your hoodie into the dryer on high heat. This is where the real magic happens. The heat will shrink the fibers, making your hoodie cozier and more fitted. But beware—too much heat could turn your beloved hoodie into a doll-sized garment. Check it every 10 minutes until it’s the size you want.
Step 4: The "Oops, I Overdid It" Plan
If your hoodie shrunk too much (oops), don’t panic. Just stretch it out while it’s still warm. Pull gently at the sleeves and torso to bring it back to a wearable size. Or, you know, gift it to a small child.
Bonus Tip: How to Shrink It Less (or More!)
- Want just a little shrinkage? Use warm water instead of hot and dry it on medium heat.
- Want to go full "I accidentally made my hoodie into a baby onesie"? Wash it on hot, dry it on the sun’s surface (or just max heat), and watch it transform.
By the Way...
